‘I will not apologise’, Hannah says for wearing head scarf Navina Vivekanandan

DAP politician says extremist mindsets such as that of a Chinese columnist who criticised her recently, must be rejected.

KUALA LUMPUR: Hannah Yeoh has drawn flak from a Chinese columnist who criticised the DAP politician for wearing a head scarf to a ‘buka puasa’ event at a mosque recently.

In a Facebook posting, the Selangor State Speaker and assemblywoman for Subang Jaya brushed off the criticisms after pictures of her at the event were posted on Facebook.

“… extreme views exist in every faith & race”, she wrote today.

“Malaysians who want to move this country forward must reject such extreme views.”

Hannah asserted that the main reason why she had joined politics was to take a stand against such an extremist mindset.

“I will not apologise for my stand,” she declared.

Netizens who had viewed the Facebook post lauded her stance and voiced their support for her.

One such user with the handle Seong Yeow Tan said, “You are in a mosque is correct (sic) to wear headscarf. Doesn’t compromise your faith. Don’t bother with narrow minded individuals!”

Another user, Ambiga Rajendran, commended Hannah by saying, “Well said, YB. Living in a diverse community like ours requires respect for other cultures, not extremism”.

“Thank you for standing your ground in every issue that matters!”
