PETALING JAYA: Police arrested Sept 16 red shirt rally organiser Datuk Jamal Yunos on Friday night.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said Jamal was detained at the Ampang police station.
"We arrested him under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code to prevent a crime from occurring over his alleged statements that riots would occur in Petaling Street," Zainuddin told The Star Online.
It is learnt that Jamal, the Sungei Besar Umno division chief, was detained at 9pm Friday and is being held at the Dang Wangi police station.
Earlier in the day, Deputy IGP Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said police would summoned Jamal to Dang Wangi to record a statement over statements he made on Saturday's rally at Petaling Street.
Noor Rashid reportedly said police would not compromise with anybody trying to organise the rally and would take a firm action.
Police have warned Jamal that he would be arrested if he was found culpable of instigating chaotic situations.
On Wednesday, Jamal told reporters that the rally could take place on Saturday if the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry failed to act on complaints of illegal traders.
He, however, later said he would not be in Petaling Street on Saturday, saying he has nothing to do with rally.
"I am not involved and I am not going to be in Petaling Street," he said.
Asked if he has information if protesters will gather in Petaling Street tomorrow, Jamal said he does not know.
"I repeat, I am not involved in the rally, so I do not know if one is really going to take place tomorrow," he added.
Jamal has said that he was present at the Sept 16 rally to counter the Bersih 4 rally "as a middleman."
"The police asked me to help with dispersing the crowd and that is all I did," he said adding that he did not organise the Sept 16 rally or the one to be held tomorrow. He claimed the media had "spun" facts about the rally against him.
