PKR vice-president says her party will reveal the candidate’s name for the Permatang Pauh by-election before April 23.
izzah-p44 PERMATANG PAUH: PKR has decided on its candidate for the Permatang Pauh by-election and will announce the candidate’s name before April 23, the day Barisan Nasional plans to announce their candidate who will be from Umno.
PKR vice-president and Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah told newsmen Tuesday night that her party’s plan was to reveal its candidate before BN did theirs.
She met party grassroots members at Tepian Padang in Kampung Pertama here together with her younger sister Nurul Iman.
She said the party had not shortlisted many candidates for the by-election, which was called due to her father and incumbent Anwar Ibrahim’s disqualification as its MP.
Clarifying that the party faced a big challenge in identifying the right winnable candidate for the by-election, Nurul hinted that her party had settled on one name that they were confident would be acceptable to the party and voters alike.
Nurul acknowledged that people were most likely weary of by-elections and pointed out that “the candidate must be able to convince voters to come out and vote on that day.”
She also admitted that PKR was concerned about a low voter turnout as polling day for the by-election fell on May 7, a working Thursday in most states.
Nomination is on Saturday, April 25. It is widely believed that the PKR candidate is party president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Anwar’s wife.
