KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has accused Umno of orchestrating a campaign
of intimidation against N. Surendran, his lawyer in the “Sodomy 2”
appeal to the Federal Court.
In a press statement issued today, he said
Umno had organised the lodging of hundreds of police reports against
Surendran.
“Among
others, top Umno leader Mukhriz Mahathir has publicly called upon all
Umno divisions to lodge police reports, whereas Umno-owned Utusan
Malaysia’s editorial has called for immediate action against my
lawyer,” he said.
Anwar said
Surendran was being intimidated because he accused Prime Minister
Najib Razak of being involved in the Sodomy 2 “conspiracy”.
He
defended the lawyer’s right to speak of Najib’s alleged involvement,
saying the alleged conspiracy was one of his main defences in the High
Court and would also be used extensively in his appeal to the Federal Court this October.
He claimed
that with the slew of police reports, Umno was trying to prevent
Surendran from even mentioning Najib’s involvement in the conspiracy.
“Najib is doing the same thing as his mentor did, which is to employ all means within his power through the media,
police, the Attorney-General and the Judiciary in order to subvert the
course of justice and to take me out of the political equation.”
The statement calls on Umno and Najib to stop interfering with the legal process with direct or indirect pressure.
