Doc: Mat Sabu’s injury caused by car - By YUEN MEIKENG
KUALA LUMPUR: The knee injury sustained by PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu during the Bersih 2.0 rally is consistent with his account that he was hit by a car, a doctor told the Suhakam public inquiry.
Dr Ankimtay Anak Rutel, an orthopaedic specialist who treated Mohamad, said the PAS leader’s injury was caused by being knocked on a flat surface.
To a question by Bar Council chairman Lim Chee Wee, who acted as an observer, the 33-year-old doctor said the injury on Mohamad’s right knee could be said to be consistent with his claims that he was hit by a car.
However, Dr Ankimtay, who was attached to Hospital Kuala Lumpur at the time, said the injury only required outpatient treatment.
The inquiry, chaired by Suhakam vice-chairman Prof Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee, was set up to look into alleged human rights violations during the July 9 rally.
Previously, Mohamad told the inquiry that a car driven by a policeman had rammed into his motorcycle during the rally.
Another witness, Dr Nurul Azlean Norzan, a doctor who treated Mohamad at the Jinjang police lock-up, ruled out that his injury was caused by him falling down while standing.
“When I examined his knee, I did not see any small stones or sand on his skin, which could suggest that he had fallen on the road,” said the 31-year-old.
The inquiry resumes today.
