KOTA KINABALU: Police smashed a car theft syndicate operating in Brunei and Sabah with the arrest of eight suspects, including a police officer, and seizure of 38 luxury vehicles worth more than RM4 million.
State police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said the modus operandi of the syndicate was to rent luxury cars in Brunei and smuggled them into Sabah where they were sold off.
He said police had recovered several stolen cars such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Honda, Toyota and Nissan here and in Penampang and Keningau.
The syndicate members would convince potential buyers that the cars were "clean".
They would then agree to register the vehicles for the buyers with the Road Transport Department (RTD).
"We began investigations in July, following a request from Brunei police to assist them in tracing stolen rented vehicles."
Hamza said investigations revealed that the syndicate had help from within the RTD for the issuance of registration cards and road tax.
So far, police had received reports from 18 buyers who claimed to have been deceived by the syndicate.
