Zaid-RPK link: PKR says Hisham confused, it's embarrasing ...
Wong Choon Mei,
Pakatan Rakyat leaders fired salvos at Home Minister Hishamuddin Hussein, questioning his motives for picking on PKR co-ordinator Zaid Ibrahim for having met fugitive blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin in London recently.
“I think Hishammuddin is confused and I find it embarrassing for a minister to show such a lack of understanding for what is a personal issue – the choice of friends,” PKR vice-president Sivarasa Rasiah told Malaysia Chronicle.
“If Zaid wants to meet RPK, really, that’s his business. If I am in London, I would also go and meet RPK for a cup of tea. We are friends and why shouldn’t we meet? If the government thinks that he has done something wrong, then they should go after him. But the problem is they don’t and at the same time, they don’t anyone to meet or talk with him either. Isn’t that ridiculous?”
Pathetic
In the past week, there has been an Umno-inspired media blitz on RPK, the country’s top blogger famous for his thunderous and frequently hilarious revelations about Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
The brouhaha began with PKR turncoat Zahrain Mohd Hashim telling the press that he had proof that Zaid had links with RPK. The Bayan Baru MP called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate who was funding RPK and P Balasubramaniam, a private investigator who made startling accusations against Najib and Rosmah in a 2008 statutory declaration. In his sworn statement, Bala had implicated the couple in the high-profile Altantuya murder and Scorpene submarines corruption cases.
“I want the MACC as well as Minister to investigate... RPK had received money from sponsors. In an email on July 4, a lawyer Amarjeet Singh said that he sent RM470,000 to RPK. This is what I’m going to put forward to the MACC,” Zahrain, who himself quit PKR earlier this year amid a cloud of graft allegations.
“I’m going tell them what I’ve got. I want MACC to realize and Minister to realize. What was he doing in Manchester with RPK. If he is a fugitive, what is a leader for Pakatan Rakyat doing with a fugitive? We don’t want to be deceived.”
Zaid has shot back, defending his relationship with RPK and ridiculing Zahrain as 'pathetic'.
With friends like these, who needs enemies
RPK currently lives in self-exile in London after absconding in 2009 to escape a slew of criminal defamation charges that he says were trumped up by the Attorney-General. From his new base, he has still been able to operate his popular Malaysia Today news portal and still maintains contacts with his informers in the government.
Of late, he has been involved in the establishment of Friends of Pakatan Rakyat, an organization formed to rally support from Malaysians who share the coalition’s vision of a better Malaysia. In particular, FOPR aims to harness the global strength of highly qualified Malaysians and former Malaysians living and working abroad to tap into their expertise and financial strength in preparedness for GE 13.
“Perhaps this is the answer for the Umno paranoia, Zahrain is just the messenger. Umno leaders fears FOPR will expose the BN government for what is – lies, hypocrisy, corruption and oppression," PKR strategic director Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
"They also fears what Bala will reveal about Najib and Rosmah next week. But in their panic, they have only destroyed more of their own credibility. Really, when you have ‘friends’ like Hishammuddin and Zahrain, you don’t need enemies."
