Allow a casino in Sabah, PBS man urges PM

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah has urged the Prime Minister to consider approving a casino licence for Sabah, to further boost the State's tourism.

Its Batu Sapi MP, Datuk Edmund Chong Ket Wah, said the existing law like that applied at Genting Highlands can be applied for the casino in Sabah.

"Kundasang in Sabah has the same climate and environment like Genting.

In Sabah now there are 44 jackpot licences and 425 jackpot machinesÉif all these 425 jackpot machines are placed in one building, it is already a casino," he said. Edmund, who fully supported the proposed introduction of sports betting, believed opening a casino in Kundasang would also improve the local economy.

"If not for the casino in Genting, there will be no indoor and outdoor theme parks, no Arena of Stars for international stars and shows.

There will not be thousands of rooms up there and no millions of people going there and no millions of ringgits being earned," he explained.

He hoped Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would be open-minded and far-sighted enough to consider it before Singapore decides on building more casinos on the island republic.

Singapore has built three casinos namely the Marina Bay Sands Casino costing US$5.5 billion, Resort World Sentosa at US$4.7billion and Crown Resorts Casino.

Debating the Tenth Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat, Chong also urged the Federal Government to hasten upgrading of the Sandakan and Lahad Datu airports, being the main entry points for nature-loving tourists to the East Coast.

He said these airports once upgraded would also contribute to boosting the agriculture industry, particularly oil palm, which is focused at the Palm Oil Industrial Clusters in Sandakan and Lahad Datu.

He also called for better security measures in the east coast, not only for maintaining the peace and order in the area but also tourists and lift the status through the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC), the state's economic development plan that lasts until 2025.

The focused sectors of tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and transportation need to be given attention in achieving the SDC objectives, he said.

Chong also touched on the unsatisfactory condition of the road network in Sandakan.

He said even after the completion of the Northern Ring Road traffic there was still congestion.

He said the delay in completion of the Southern Ring Road also in his constituency has also resulted in traffic congestion at the existing roads, hoping this project can be completed soon as possible. - .dailyexpress.com.my
