ALOR SETAR: A businessman, facing a charge of murdering a jogger eight years ago, said in the High Court that he had sex with the victim before she was found murdered.

Shahril Jaafar, 33, is on trial on a charge of murdering Chee, 25, between Jan 14 and 15, 2006, near the Cinta Sayang Club in Taman Ria Jaya, Sungai Petani.

Chee, a marketing executive, was later found dumped in the neighbourhood where she had been jogging. She had been raped.

Shahril, in defence statement, told the Court that he called a man known as “Wayne” at about 3pm on Jan 14, 2006 to get him a girl for sex. He had been watching a pornographic video earlier in the day.

“I told him the girl must be non-Malay in her 20s,” said Shahril. “Wayne called me back at about 4 pm. He had arranged for the girl to meet me near the Cinta Sayang Club at about 5pm.”

“I was waiting in my car near the club when Chee appeared and knocked on my window.”

“I asked her to move to the back seat. She demanded RM350 and we had sex.”

Shahril, represented by counsel Shamsul Sulaiman, added that he did not use a condom.

Chee, according to him, left when his mother called him to pick her up after a golf tournament at the Cinta Sayang Club.

Chee had no injuries on her when she left, he added.

“It was the first and last time I saw her. I only got to know that Chee had been murdered after reading about it in a newspaper the next day,” said Shahril.

“Wayne”, he said, could not be reached.

The High Court freed Shahril from a murder charge after ruling on June 25 last year that the prosecution had failed to make out a prima facie case.

The Court of Appeal set aside Shahril’s acquittal on Oct 13 and ordered him to enter his defence.
